State standardized test scores were slightly on the rise the past school year.
The State Education Department says a higher percentage of students in Grades 3 through 8 scored "proficient" in the English language arts and math exams over 2016. In ELA this year, the percentage of students who scored at the proficient level increased by nearly 2 percentage points to 39.8. In math, just over 40 percent of students scored proficient, up one percent from 2016.
This year's opt-out rate was about 19 percent, down from roughly 21 percent last year. Students who refused the test were much more likely to be from low-need or average-need districts; much more likely to be white; less likely to be economically disadvantaged; and much less likely to be an English Language Learner.
