After Governor Andrew Cuomo signaled Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to resign amid allegations of physical abuse, the AG has released a statement saying he will do so at the close of business on Tuesday.
In a statement, Cuomo said he'll be demanding an immediate investigation into the claims made in an article for "The New Yorker" magazine.
Four women accused Schneiderman of physical assault, including choking and slapping.
The New York State Legislature will pick a replacement for Attorney General Schneiderman. Schneiderman announced his resignation yesterday hours after a story broke accusing him of physically abusing women. Now state lawmakers will choose someone to serve the remainder of Schneiderman's four year term, which ends this year. That means the seat will be on the ballot this November. Republican attorney Manny Alicandro from Manhattan already announced his bid for the office before Schneiderman's resignation.
The Manhattan district attorney's office is opening an investigation into New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. This, after "The New Yorker" last night published a story about four women, two on record, who accused Schneiderman of assault during relationships with him. During his career he presented himself as a champion for women.
Fast forward to now and Schneiderman is denying the disturbing allegations made against him but will still be resigning at the end of the day. Ironically, Schneiderman previously announced that he would look into the Manhattan DA's office with concerns on how it handled sex assault allegations against former movie producer Harvey Weinstein.
Here's Schneiderman's complete statement:
“It’s been my great honor and privilege to serve as Attorney General for the people of the State of New York. In the last several hours, serious allegations, which I strongly contest, have been made against me. While these allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office’s work at this critical time. I therefore resign my office, effective at the close of business on May 8, 2018.”

"The New Yorker has published an article on Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, which reports multiple women making serious allegations of assault. No one is above the law, including New York's top legal officer. I will be asking an appropriate New York District Attorney to commence an immediate investigation, and proceed as the facts merit. My personal opinion is that, given the damning pattern of facts and corroboration laid out in the article, I do not believe it is possible for Eric Schneiderman to continue to serve as Attorney General, and for the good of the office, he should resign."
