Colonie Teacher's Aide Accused of Sexually Abusing 5-Year-Old Boy

A teacher's aide with the North Colonie School District is facing sex abuse charges after Southgate School staff say they saw him acting inappropriately with a 5-year-old special needs student.

23-year-old Ryan Pellerin of Guilderland has been charged with sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a vulnerable or physically disabled person following the incident, which is said to have taken place on the school playground.

Police say Pellerin turned himself with his attorney in Thursday morning. Police say they're concerned that others may have been victimized, and are urging anyone with information to get in touch.

Here is a statement from the North Colonie School District:

"During the afternoon on Tuesday, October 23, district officials were made aware of allegations of inappropriate physical contact between a district employee and a student. The district immediately notified Colonie Police about the allegations and reported the incident to the New York State Education Department. Police promptly began an investigation with full cooperation by administrators and staff. The employee resigned the morning of Wednesday, October 24 and has been prohibited from all school premises.

Earlier this morning, the district was informed by Colonie Police that the employee has been arrested.

Here in North Colonie, safety is paramount, and we will continue to take all appropriate actions to maintain a safe and secure learning environment for all of our students."

Questions or concerns about these allegations and/or the arrest can be directed to the Colonie Police Department at (518) 783-2744.
