"Safe Ride" Program Returns to Albany County

A 30-year tradition in Albany County will resume on New Year's Eve and continue overnight into New Year's morning.

Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple tells WGY about the man who got the, "Safe Ride" program underway.

"It was setup by Denis Foley, and he was kind of the Grandfather of, 'Stop DWI,' and he did a great job setting up a program that's been very successful, and modeled all over the state."

Since its inception, the program has helped people get home safely from their celebrations.

To boot, there has not been an alcohol-related death in Albany County on New Year's Eve.

One of the program's sponsors, Martin, Harding & Mazzotti will be providing free cab rides.

CDTA will have free bus rides available at all regular stops from 8 PM to 2 AM, while Uber and Lyft will offer a $20 new user credit.
