Free College Tuition for Gold Star Kids Stalls in New York Assembly

The Tag of a Brother in Arms

State lawmakers are scrambling to understand and explain why a bill providing free tuition to "Gold Star Kids," children of military members killed in the line of duty, has been put on hold by an Assembly committee at a time when the children of those in this country illegally will get financial aid.

Many Republicans, like Assemblyman Robert Smullen of Meco, say this is a slap in the face to veterans and their families.

However, Democrats who control the committee say they had no choice given the fact that the bill was introduced after the budget was approved and with no financial estimates attached to it.

Governor Cuomo says there's still plenty of time to pass the bill and he supports it.
