New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is being awarded an Emmy for his COVID-19 television briefings.

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences says this is in recognition of his "leadership" and use of TV to "calm people around the world."

Cuomo says he considers it a jointly-held-Emmy, specifically saying members of the Albany press corps deserve credit for what he called "joint performances."

The Emmys are being held in all-remote or virtual fashion on Monday night.

New York State has the highest death count in the country from COVID-19 according to CDC data at nearly 34,000 since the pandemic began.
