You've made it!
Pat yourselves on the back and high five each other, because you have made it to the end of the 10 week Training Challenge! How do you feel? I know you’re proud, and you should be. But you should also feel stronger and healthier. Each step you have taken along the way has been a step toward not only accomplishing a goal, but also toward a healthier and happier you.
Think back to the first day we met at the Crossings. Were you nervous? Anxious? Unsure you’d be able to do it? Did you feel self-conscious, afraid of what others might think? How do you feel now? Remember when running for 3 minutes straight seemed impossible? Well, look how far you have come. Tomorrow you will be running a 5K.
This is the third year that I have been a part of the Training Challenge. Each year, I am amazed at the transformation that takes place during this journey from the couch to 5K. I have met some truly incredible women who have shared personal stories of tragedy and triumph. Each woman’s reason for doing this is different, but their goals are all the same: to cross the finish line. For the mother who died of breast cancer. To be a good role model for their daughter. To reclaim their body after escaping an abusive relationship. To prove to themselves that they have the physical strength and emotional fortitude to push themselves a little (or a lot) harder than they ever have. So many reasons, so much inspiration.
I started running on my own a few years ago. It was a private journey the first time, and one that I was reluctant to share when I agreed to do the first Training Challenge. But what I discovered that year, is that the feeling of accomplishment is multiplied when others share it with you. I was proud of not only myself, but of the dozens of others I got to know. We did it together, and I felt as much joy and elation watching them finish as I did for myself.
On the eve of the 35th Freihofer’s Run for Women, take a moment to reflect and think back on this transformative process. Look where you started, and look where you are now. Think about where you want to go from here. Whether it’s a one-time bucket list check off, or the start of a healthier lifestyle, take pride in knowing that you have accomplished what you set out to do. I’ll be looking for you on the course, and at the finish line, waiting to high five you or hug you (although with tomorrow’s heat and humidity, expect a high five!).
Congratulations, and thank you for sharing your journey with me.
