A few years ago, a very close friend of mine learned that her husband has Multiple Sclerosis. In that moment, their lives changed. What would the future hold? How long would he be able to run and play with their two young children? Would he end up in a wheelchair? Would he wake up one morning unable to see? There are no answers for people living with MS, no looking into a crystal ball to see even into next week.
As his wife, she threw herself into learning as much about MS as she could. As their friends, we rallied around them. We walk to raise money for research. We spread the word to raise awareness. Did you know that here in the Capital Region, there are more than 3,000 people with MS? The diagnosis rate here in Upstate NY is twice the national average and nobody is really sure why.
My friend and her husband are doing well. They struggle with not knowing what the future holds, and hoping for a miracle drug that can reverse the damage and cure this disease.
That can only happen through research and trials. And those things cost money. Coming up on November 2, there is a chance for you to help. The Women Against MS Luncheon will be held at Wolfert's Roost Country Club. The guest speaker is David Lander, who was Squiggy on Laverne and Shirley, and has been living with MS since 1984.
It should be a great event, featuring mimosas and a chocolate fountain, a handbag silent auction and a drawing for a beautiful bracelet from Frank Adams. They had me at mimosas, but the rest will be fab as well!
Hope to see you there!
-Kelly
