Read Shepherd's "Good! Not Good!"
WHO AM I AND WHAT IS THIS?

Hi!  Read Shepherd here.  This is a recent shot of me along an Adirondack trail, enjoying the fall colors, and happy that I don't have to rake these leaves.

Anyway, I've been at 810 WGY for almost 10years now as assignment editor and daytime anchor.  I also help Joe Gallagher get through his Saturday morning show, and once in a while, they even let me have the microphone and fill in for Joe or for Chuck and Kelly!  I play baseball in the summer with the Capital District Men's Senior Baseball League.  You might find me at the end of the day at the Southern Saratoga "Y" in Clifton Park sitting in the whirlpool and talking to myself.  I have a beautiful wife named Lorie whom I've known since I was 6 years old and I have a really neat kittycat named ' Toga.  (As in SARAtoga.  Lorie's idea.).  And now, we have a new doggy, a 2-yr-old Japanese Chin we adopted from Heaven Sent Animal Rescue of Glenville!

Anyway, what I'm going to do with this blog is give you a bit of my personal take--and what the newsroom thinks--about some of the stories and events that cross our path.  This isn't really an editorial page or anything like that, and I suspect anyone wondering about my political leanings will come away still wondering.  Hope you check in once in a while.  Send me an e-mail at readshepherd@wgy.com.

Read's bio

                                         downtown Tiffin

I was born in Tiffin, Ohio, which really exists!  It's a small town in Northwest Ohio, and a pretty neat place to be from, all in all.  I graduated from Bowling Green State University with a degree in journalism, and have worked in places like Gallipolis, Ohio, Huntington, W. Va, Toledo, Ohio, and Tampa-St. Petersburg.  I came to Albany and 810 WGY in November, 2001, and am the Assignment Editor and Daytime News Anchor.  It's basically my job to decide who covers what---not always an easy task!  I'm on the air at the top and bottom of the hour, Monday-Friday, with Al Roney, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity.  I'm also the news voice (and sometimes, the voice of reason) for Joe Gallagher's Saturday show.  I play baseball in the Capital District Men's Baseball League (2B and 1B). I also play tuba in the Memorial Town band of Colonie.
Some neat links--check 'em out

I'm just getting started on this, so give me a chance!  But, aside from news and baseball, I'm really into things like forgotten roads or ghost towns.  Here's a really neat site called "Forgotten Ohio" (my home state).  You might be interested in the link to the Cincinnati Subway.  Never used....still there.  Also, the story of Chippewa Lake Amusement Park. Wow!

On that same subject, I ran across this last summer.  It's the story of the abandoned sections of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.  Still there.  I'd love to drive down one day, put my headphones on, and just go walking...

Jim Knapp told me about this a few days ago.  If I get a chance to go before the snow starts falling, I will.  Tahawus.  Ghost town in the Adirondacks.

Here's another forgotten place I want to visit some day.  Centralia, Pennsylvania.  What a story!  And it's all true...

Mar. 21-NOT GOOD
Monday 03-21-2011 7:47am ET
OK, spring is here.  That, at least, is a good sign.  Of course, we're supposed to get a little snow/sleet today, so that's not so great.

But, still, a couple of downers this morning. One of the most visible faces of the Albany Police Dept. is facing arraignment on drunk driving charges.  Det. Jim Miller, the long-time spokesman for the public safety department, was pulled over early Saturday morning.  He didn't crash his car, and no one was hurt, but for getting behind the wheel, he's been suspended without pay until it's resolved.  I have to wonder if his career as a cop is finished after almost 20 years.  Definitely finished as public information officer.  Sometimes, all it takes is one mistake (or at least one time getting caught).

At U-Albany, president George Philip has called off Fountain Day, in the aftermath of the "Kegs & Eggs" riot.  Surprising?  Hardly.  Not when you consider Fountain Day itself became something of a riot scene a few years back.   Yeah, I know.  Different crowd of students.  But, given the damage to the university's reputation (not to mention the cars whose windows were smashed in), it's probably the best way to go.  Question now becomes:  Will it return next year?  Should it return?  And, hey.  I'll bet a few freshmen jump into the fountain anyway....

On the home front, Fuji is OK after being stepped on a week ago, but we think he might have eaten something he shouldn't have yesterday.  Deardarling wife is all worried, but puppydog seemed all right when I took him outside a little while ago.

A not-so-great incident yesterday involving Fuji the doggy that ended with a quick trip to the vet...

My deardarling wife took Fuji out for his afternoon walk, and was just coming back in the house, when he got a bit spooked by a noise.  The two of them got tangled up in the leash, and she ended up stepping on his right front paw.  Hard.

When I got home about a half hour later, he wasn't putting any weight on that paw, and I immediately called the vet to say we were coming over.  Fortunately, the doctor couldn't find any break or dislocation anywhere, and we were out of there fairly quickly with just a couple of anti-inflammatory pills.

Fuji did amaze the doctor at one point, when he gobbled down the pill like it was a juicy hambone.  That, after the doctor said "He won't take it here.  He's probably too nervous about being in a strange place."   Guess puppydog is full of surprises.

This morning, he's still a bit slow, but I suspect he likes the extra attention.  Or maybe he's just becoming a drama queen......

And, so, we get back to what passes for normal in the WGY newsroom.  Chuck is back from vacation, and I can go back to the assignment & anchor desk.

A thought or two on a couple of stories we've had lately.  In the aftermath of the latest scandal at the Capitol, the one involving Sen. Carl Kruger and Assemblyman Whatsisname, Ed Cox, state GOP chairman, actually said ethics violations at the Capitol was a "Democratic" problem.

Really?

I'm sorry, Ed.  Joe Bruno belonged to what party?  Oh.  A "MOSTLY Democratic problem."   Gee.  Thanks for clarifying that.  You know, one thing about partisan politics that truly annoys me is the speed with which some moron representing one party will stand up to point a finger at the other guy and say "it's all his fault" when something goes awry.

And, somehow, I get the sense that maybe, just maybe, any flooding this year in the Capital Region won't be too bad.  I believe the ice jam broke up on the Mohawk River and is now moving downstream---very good news for those in the Stockade section of Schenectady.

Monday 03-07-2011 3:43pm ET

This is one of those days that I'll look back on someday and say to myself "I made it through."

Well, so far.

It started at 3:30 am, with what may have been the scariest commute of the winter.   Snow, sleet, ice, freezing rain, and about 20,000 homes & businesses in the area without power. And I'm filling in for Chuck Custer this week while he's on vacation---somewhere warm and sunny. With that many people in the dark, Kelly & I decided to handle school closings the old-fashioned way---read them ourselves.  All 21 pages of them...and find a way to reasonably stay on time.  Add flood warnings and a couple of states of emergency to the mix, and it makes for a fun morning!

Almost immediately after we were off the air at 9 came word that a portion of the roof of the new Beech-Nut plant in the town of Florida had partially collapsed.  Good news...no one hurt and no one trapped.

Naturally, this was a day Kelly and I had 5 interviews to do for this week's shows, so I was hopping, to say the least, and trying to focus on four things at once.  Typical Monday.

Not to be outdone by anything, today was the day I'd made an appointment for some help with an amended tax return.  Not as good as I'd hoped, but nowhere near as bad as I'd feared.  So that's done.

And, of course, when I get home, the driveway is waiting.  Thickest, wettest snow I've ever seen!  I got as much done as I could.  Mother Nature and some warming temperatures will have to do the rest.

As you might guess, I then took the doggy out for his afternoon walk.  Fortunately, he took care of things right away, and I was able to get back in here, where I'm typing this with the kitty cat walking back and forth in front of the computer screen!

A little less excitement tomorrow, please......
