ROAD FOOD
Everglades - Route 9 - Wilton, NY Our listener told us that they serve Alligator Tail but recommended the pulled pork barbecue.
J.P. Kelley's - Route 9 - Lake George, NY We got a big thumbs up for their New England Clam Chowder from a listener who tells us, "It's the best chowder I've had...ever!"
El Mexicano - Route 4 - Hudson Falls, NY Our listener said order anything and also said there were all kinds of complimentary extras including a "lucious salsa."
The Brooklyn Pickle - 2222 Burnet Avenue - Syracuse, NY WGY News Anchor Read Shepherd says when in Syracuse look this place up and go for the corned beef or pastrami. Read says that "it's the best ever."
Mike's Diner - Old State & Carman Road - Guilderland, NY Comes highly recommended for their hot dogs with Greek sauce and home made Greek pastries.
Chubby's (2 locations) - Pawling Avenue and 5th Avenue near the Snow Man - Troy, NY There was a legendary beef sandwich chain in the 60s and 70s called Neba. Chubby's serves a sandwich called the Top Rounder that our listener remembers eating as a kid at Neba's. He also urged us to check out the cheeseburger subs.
Charlie's - Route 30 - Amsterdam, NY This is a new one to the area and to us and they've got something that sounds irresistable! It's called the Slammin' Shrimp Chimichanga that is packed to overflowing with shrimp and a classic Mexican sauce.
The Maine Diner - Route 1 - Kennebunkport, ME You can find this favorite of Don's on the way to Kennebunkport from Ogonquit in Maine, and the seafood pie is a favorite for Don - our listener Marilyn says to go for the Hot Lobster Roll and fresh blueberry sundae. Thanks Marilyn!
Miss Albany Diner - Broadway - Albany, NY It's small, crowded, and highly regarded. Everyone told us to try the Mad Irish Toast that's made with pecans and a whiskey sauce.
Kelly's Deli - Route 9 - Wilton, NY Our listener loved and recommends highly the Turkey Dinner Sandwich. Intrigued? So are we! She describes it as a complete Thanksgiving dinner complete with turkey gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce...the works, and its all served on a roll. Don says, "This one I will try."
The Pig Pit - Ontario Street - Cohoes, NY Long time listener Merle Farnham, who tipped us off to Gus's Hot Dogs in Watervliet - a smash hit with the WGY morning show faithful, says it's a hole in the wall but for barbecue it is simply outstanding. You cannot go wrong and Merle knows great road food.
Abbot's Frozen Custard - Multiple Locations - Rochester, NY When you're anywhere near Rochester, check out the phonebook for for one of the many Abbot's locations and make sure to sample not the ice cream, not the soft ice cream but the thick, creamy frozen custard that is velvety smooth with the, "Wow that's (insert your favorite flavor here)!" Don says, "This is the best frozen dessert I've ever had on the road."
Clam Box - 246 High Street - Ipswich, MA The best clams in the Atlantic come from the Ipswich clam flats, just ask any New Englander - and the best fried clams Don's ever had come from the famous Clam Box in Ipswich, Mass. You can't miss it - it looks like a giant red and white serving box you'll get the clams in. The clams are crunchy on the outside, sweet and tender with every bite and their secret to making them so good is a special way of double dipping the clams in different oils. They're so sweet and good you won't even need tartar sauce, just a shake of salt. It's one of Don's favorite road food stops around so don't fail to make the drive to Ipswich to check out the local sites and scenery and sample the great fried clams at the Clam Box.
Mama's Pizza - West Circular Drive - Saratoga Springs, NY This sounded absolutely teriffic: "Sloppy, succulent pizza" A new version of classic cheese-tomato pizza.
Homefront Cafe - Main Street - Altamont, NY Our listener was taken with the cafe's WWII memorabilia and a menu that includes new versions of WWII era dishes like "great grandma used to make."
The Partners - Route 30 - Minaville Our listeners rave about the pancakes here.
Duncan's Restaurant - Route 7/Hoosick Street - Troy, NY Another great breakfast place according to our listeners and they even have home made bread toast.
Matt's Dogs - Route 32 - Greenville, NY They have a special onions and peppers topping one of our listeners found to be unique and delicious.
Fly Creek Cider Mill - County Road 26 - outside Cooperstown, NY Don declares, "I must try this." What is this? Try the pot roast sandwich with thinly sliced pot roast heaped on rustica bread, teeming with naturally cooked in juices and covered with a special horseradish sauce.
TePee Pete's - Route 20 - Cherry Valley, NY (next to TePee Souvenirs) "Another place I'll be trying," Don says. Our listener tells us that their seven pepper chili is more than worth the trip.
Brooks Barbecue - Route 7 - Oneonta, NY A classic stop for barbecued ribs and chicken (that's grilled without a red sauce). Delicious!
Easy Cafe - Route 7 - Cairo, NY Our listener recommends the chicken pesto at this stop south of Albany.
Matt's Seafood - Saratoga Avenue - Cohoes, NY Our listener loves this place for fresh seafood and suggests the freshly made fish nuggets.
N.Y. Deli - Falls Street - Seneca Falls, NY According to our listener this is as good a deli as you'd find in New York City for all of their classic sandwiches and salads.
Ben and Bill's NY Deli - Price Chopper - Slingerlands, NY A classic. In just a short time, Price Chopper's tribute to an Albany legend. This deli received countless nominations from our listeners.
Chef's Takeout - Route 146 and 20 - Guilderland, NY Our listener said their Italian specialties are fantastic and singled out their Pork Mustardo - a center-cut pork loin with a velvety mustard sauce.
Rudy's Lakeside Drive-In - County Route 89 and Fred Haynes Blvd. - Oswego, NY Show producer Joe Yerdon raves about this seasonal special place from his old college town of Oswego. Rudy's offers lots of fish specials, burgers, and is famous for its Texas hot sauce. Joe dares anyone who makes the trip to check out the calamari fries.
Dinosaur Barbecue - 246 West Willow Street - Syracuse, NY The Dinosaur first came to be at this location in Syracuse and it is a legendary road food stop. While there are Dinosaurs in Rochester and New York City now, the one in Syracuse is where it all began and it is worthwhile for all the great barbecue ribs and the fixins. Don't be surprised if you get to mingle at this blues-music-blaring biker bar with the Hell's Angels or the CEOs - they all come here to eat.
So Long, Rocky!

Read and Don talked about the problems with squirrels in the backyard and one of our listeners sent us a video that presents the solution. Give it a look right here!
Crabcakes, anyone?
Thursday 07-03-2008 8:44am ET
It's the Fourth of July and that means eating good off the grill or dipping into the seafood. After all, who doesn't love a good crabcake? Well, think of all the good eats you could get out of this guy who was caught by a British fisherman - a 17-pound edible crab! Good luck cracking these claws...which are as big as a person's hand!
