Finally made the trip to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island a few weeks ago.   For a history buff like me, it's a truly humbling experience, and one I suggest everyone take in at least once in their lives.   Imagining millions of people once roaming the halls and corridors of Ellis Island, all awaiting their shot at the American Dream.  The first glimpse of America being Lady Liberty.  I have family who passed through those doors.  Endured the journey to reach freedom.  I did not encounter one frown, one crying child, or one harsh word from anyone making the same visit we did.

But, it's also an easy trip to find history here locally.  A one hour drive in any direction will reveal sign posts and benches, farmhouses and simple markers.  The underground railroad had stations all throughout the Capital Region.  The MacIntosh family put down some of their first apple roots right here.  The trip to the big city can drive history home, but a Sunday pile into the family car can provide just as much knowledge and wonder about our forefathers and pioneers of their time.

Soak it in this Independence Day.  Picnics, fireworks and sales on household stuff all have their place - but remind yourself about what the day represents.   Be safe, and enjoy the 4th.
