I never worked directly under Don Decker.. I asked about or applied for jobs at the TV stations that Don worked at as the News Director but both times I was told by Don thanks  and “I know where you  are”… which I took  as he *did*  know there I was, and, if the right opportunity appeared, I would get a call.

I grew up listening to WTRY 980AM which, at the time, was a rock-and-roll radio station with a news department. Don did the news and had a great delivery and knew the personalities, political figures and the stories that he was reading. Of course he went on to head up the news department at WRGB and WGY when the stations were together on Balltown Road and owned by G.E.  Don was also the news director at WTEN.

Don was ever so inquisitive, he would read every newspaper he would get his hands on, and even when he was retired, I would run into him at a grocery store, and Don would be doing what I often did at grocery stores – pick up newspapers and read stories that we had not seen in the other papers we had bought. He was a pro, a hard worker and, for me, always very encouraging and inquisitive about what I was doing. I don’t think any of us who were fortunate to know Don will ever forget him.
