Governor Kathy Hochul says New York may start searching overseas for workers to fix huge staffing shortages at hospitals and nursing homes across the state.

Those staffing woes could grow next week, when the state starts enforcing a COVID vaccine mandate for anyone who works in a hospital or nursing home. Hochul says she is reaching out to the Department of State to find out about visas for foreign workers as a temporary fix to the staffing problems. Come Monday, employers can fire unvaccinated hospital and nursing home workers for refusing to roll up their sleeve to get the COVID vaccine.
